Best Time to Visit Sognefjord: Summer Routes, Winter Trips, Weather

The best time to visit Sognefjord depends on your plan

The best time to visit Sognefjord is not one date on the calendar. It is the season in which the things you want are actually running. Many of the region's sights, from the fast boat to the mountain road to the stave churches, operate in fixed windows, while the train and the Nærøyfjord boat carry on through the winter on a reduced timetable. So start with your plan and then read the season that fits.

This page works from operating dates, not from weather averages, and it does not rank the seasons. Dates for 2026 are the ones published at the time of writing. The next season's timetables will follow, so check each operator before you book.

Summer: boats and the mountain road

The widest range of options is available in the warm months.

In summer, the sailings and the roads work together. The fast boat from Bergen to Flåm has a published timetable from 1 April to 31 October 2026, and the Aurlandsfjellet scenic route, 47 km long, opened on 1 June in 2026. After opening, night closures and closures in bad weather can still occur, so check the status before you drive. The glacier boat at Nigardsbreen starts, depending on the melt, at the end of May or in June and runs until September. See the Nigardsbreen page for the details.

For walkers, the Aurlandsdalen valley is usually walkable from about June to the end of October, depending on the weather. The bus to the start runs daily in July and August, and from Friday to Sunday in June, September and October. Read more on the hiking page. Long summer days give you plenty of daylight for a full programme, though we do not give sunrise or sunset times.

Sognefjord weather

We do not publish a monthly climate table here. Climate normals, which use the 1991 to 2020 reference period, are long-term averages and not a forecast for 2026. Mountains and fjord valleys differ, and conditions can change within a day, so pack layers and keep your plans flexible.

For your own trip, check a local forecast a few days before you leave and watch the operator notices for boats, roads and trains. Weather matters most for the mountain road, the glacier and the longer hikes.

Spring and autumn

Spring and autumn are the shoulder seasons, and their windows differ by sight. Borgund stave church is open from 15 April to 14 October 2026 according to its owner, and Urnes from 2 May to 30 September 2026. See stave churches for details. Fire restrictions in and near forest apply from 15 April to 15 September, which matters if you camp or cook outdoors.

The Flåmsbana runs all year, so rail trips fit spring and autumn too. The Lærdal Tunnel on the E16 has announced night closures from 16 November 2026, see the tunnel page.

Winter

In winter several things change. The Aurlandsfjellet road is closed, Urnes and Borgund are outside their seasons, and the glacier museum in Fjærland opens only on Tuesdays and Thursdays from January to March. The Flåmsbana and the Nærøyfjord boat keep running, the boat on a winter timetable from 16 October 2026 to 31 March 2027. Northern lights depend on geomagnetic activity and darkness, so treat a sighting as a bonus. Everything about the cold months is on the winter page.

Which season suits you? Choose summer if you want boats and the mountain road, spring or autumn if the churches and the shoulder-season windows fit your dates, and winter if the railway and the fjord cruise are your priority. The Flåmsbana is the one fixed point in every season.
