Sognefjord cruise options at a glance
A Sognefjord cruise is not one single trip. The Sognefjord is Norway's longest and deepest fjord, 205 km long and up to 1,308 m deep, and it branches into arms such as the Aurlandsfjord, the Nærøyfjord and the Lustrafjord. The boats sail on different arms and start in different places: a fast boat from Bergen, a two-hour crossing between Flåm and Gudvangen, and small RIB trips from Flåm and Balestrand.
Before booking, check which boat trips, train journeys and admissions your ticket includes. Check the season before you book, because the timetables run on different dates.

Our picks: Sognefjord boat trips
The self-guided day with a long Sognefjord cruise ends in Oslo, and the Bergen–Flåm boat ticket works only in the operating season. The fast-boat ride starts in Balestrand rather than Flåm.
Hand-picked tours, booked through Viator and GetYourGuide. Prices are indicative starting prices in euros (as of October 2026). Tap a tour for live availability and the current price in your currency.

Bergen to Flåm by fast boat
The long sailing along the Sognefjord, in season only.
The fast boat sails from the Strandkaiterminalen in Bergen and stops in Balestrand on the way. In the 2026 timetable it leaves Bergen at 08:00 and arrives in Flåm at 13:40. The return leaves Flåm at 15:30 and reaches Bergen at 20:45. The timetable covers 01.04. to 31.10.2026.
Because it is early November, that published period has just ended. For the time after 31.10.2026 you need to wait for the timetable of the next season before you plan a crossing. Until then, the Nærøyfjord cruise and the train are the options that keep running.
According to the fare matrix valid from 01.02.2026, seniors and children pay 50 % less and students 40 % less. Read the adult fare on the booking page for your date. One ticket on offer lets you choose a one-way or a return trip, on the same day or with an overnight stay, and it only applies in the timetable period. Plan the way back with care, because the return leaves in the afternoon.
Fjord cruise from Bergen
What belongs on this page and what does not.
If you are looking for a fjord cruise from Bergen on the Sognefjord, the fast boat above and the guided day tours on our day trip from Bergen page are the two ways. Other short fjord sailings from the city have their own guide: read about fjord cruises from Bergen there. If you are thinking of big ocean ships instead, see Norway fjord cruises.
How you get from Bergen to Flåm by road, rail and boat is compared on the getting there page.
Fjord safari and fast boats
Small open boats for a closer look.
A RIB provider in Flåm runs fjord safaris all year. In winter it offers a trip of 1.5 hours, from November to March. Meet 30 minutes before departure, because access closes 10 minutes before. Prices and age limits are listed with the provider, so check them when you book.
A separate fast boat tour starts in Balestrand, not in Flåm. It takes about 1.3 hours, and a life jacket, an insulated suit, goggles and a safety briefing are included. A second Balestrand trip is a guided sightseeing tour of 2 hours into the Finnabotn, with the same equipment. Both are small-boat outings and not a crossing to Flåm.
Cruises from Gudvangen and Flåm
The shorter crossing through the Nærøyfjord.
The cruise between Flåm and Gudvangen takes about 2 hours one way and also runs in the other direction. The way back goes by a separate shuttle or as part of a package. It passes the Aurlandsfjord and the Nærøyfjord. All details, including the winter timetable, are on the Nærøyfjord page. In winter the route can be changed at short notice to a return trip to Flåm.
One self-guided trip is much longer. It takes 14 hours and includes a cruise on the Sognefjord and tickets for the Flåm Railway and the Bergen Railway, but no guide and no hotel pick-up. It ends in Oslo, and the return ticket to Bergen is not included. If you prefer a train-based plan, see Norway in a Nutshell, and for the railway itself the Flåm Railway page.
Frequently asked questions
Is there a boat from Bergen to Flåm in winter?
The published Norled timetable runs from 01.04. to 31.10.2026. For the months after that, wait for the next season's timetable. The Nærøyfjord cruise between Flåm and Gudvangen keeps a winter timetable and the Flåm Railway runs all year, so you can still reach the fjord by train.
Does the fast boat stop anywhere?
Yes, it calls at Balestrand between Bergen and Flåm.
Can I get a discount on the fast boat?
The fare matrix valid from 01.02.2026 gives 50 % for seniors and children and 40 % for students. Look up the fare for your date when you book.
Is the RIB trip in Balestrand the same as the one in Flåm?
No. The Balestrand trips start at the fjord adventure base in Balestrand, and the RIB provider in Flåm runs its own trips from there.
Does the long Sognefjord trip bring me back to Bergen?
No, it ends in Oslo and the return to Bergen is not included. Plan your own way back or choose a return trip.
