The Nærøyfjord at a glance
The Nærøyfjord is one of the arms of the Sognefjord, together with the Aurlandsfjord and the Lustrafjord. It is narrow, its walls are steep, and in places the mountains rise straight from the water. Most visitors see it from a boat. A Nærøyfjord ferry, as many people call the passenger boat, sails from Flåm through the Aurlandsfjord and the Nærøyfjord to Gudvangen, and the same trip runs in the other direction.
Whether you choose the boat alone or a Nærøyfjord tour as part of a longer day, the fjord is the same. The tours with it differ in what they add around it, and the sections below explain the differences. For the wider fjord, see the Sognefjord cruise page.

Our picks: Nærøyfjord cruises and tours
For the water itself, the electric cruise from Gudvangen is the short, direct choice. The minibus days add the Viking village, Stegastein or the Flåm Railway around a cruise.

Nærøyfjord cruise
Route, timetable and what to expect on board.
The Nærøyfjord cruise runs from Flåm through the Aurlandsfjord and the Nærøyfjord to Gudvangen, about 2 hours one way, and it also runs from Gudvangen to Flåm. The return trip is a separate shuttle or part of a package. This page does not list fares, because they change by season and booking.
Winter timetable
From 16 October 2026 to 31 March 2027, the boat leaves Flåm at 09:30 and 14:45 and reaches Gudvangen at 11:30 and 16:45. From Gudvangen it leaves at 12:00 and 17:15 and arrives in Flåm at 14:00 and 19:15. Changes are possible, and in winter the route can be changed at short notice into a return trip to Flåm.
Intermediate stops
Aurland, Undredal, Dyrdal and Styvi are served only after prior notice before departure at the starting port. Without a request, the boat does not stop there.
Electric boat
The operator describes its boat as fully electric. Ships can be swapped for weather, maintenance or capacity, so do not count on one particular vessel. Replacement ships can be less accessible. One cruise from Gudvangen is described as first class, with panoramic windows and universal design, but accessibility of the whole route is not guaranteed.
Luggage
Luggage racks on board are unguarded and used at your own risk. Lockers are available at the customer centre in Flåm.
Plan to pay for the cruise separately from the railway. For a village base, see Flåm.
UNESCO World Heritage
One part of the Sognefjord system is listed.
The Nærøyfjord is part of the World Heritage site West Norwegian Fjords, listed since 2005. The site has two parts, the Nærøyfjord and the Geirangerfjord, and the second is described by our sister guide to the Geirangerfjord. UNESCO describes the listed fjords as a landscape formed by glaciers, with especially narrow, steep-walled fjords. The listing covers the Nærøyfjord part, not the whole Sognefjord, so do not read it as a label for the entire fjord system.
Gudvangen
The village at the end of the fjord.
Gudvangen is the endpoint of the cruise from Flåm and the starting point of the opposite trip. Some tours from Bergen stop here, and the Viking village Njardarheimr appears in the programme of several of them as a visiting stop. Three offers connect with the Nærøyfjord. One is the 2-hour first-class cruise from Gudvangen, fully electric and with panoramic windows. Another is a one-day minibus tour from Bergen with the waterfall Tvindefossen, a guided visit to the Viking village, a 2-hour electric cruise on the Nærøyfjord from Gudvangen, Stegastein and free time in Flåm. It includes no food and does not take children under 4 years. The third is a 12-hour tour with Flåm Railway tickets, all fees, Viking village tickets and Nærøyfjord cruise tickets, in an air-conditioned minibus.
Undredal
A small fjord village you reach by request.
Undredal lies on the way, but the boat calls there only on request, as described above. If you want to see it, announce the stop before departure. For the road and rail connections around the fjord, read the getting there page, and for other trips, the tours overview.
