The platform
The Stegastein viewpoint is a wooden platform that reaches 30 m out from the mountainside. It stands 650 m above the Aurlandsfjord, is 3.3 m wide and opened in 2006. It was designed by Todd Saunders and Tommie Wilhelmsen. From the end of the platform you look down the Aurlandsfjord, one of the arms of the Sognefjord.
Most people come for a short stop, so how you get there matters more than how long you stay. The sections below cover the bus, the car and the tours.

Our picks: ways to reach Stegastein
The bus from Flåm is the simple way up to the viewpoint. The two day tours from Bergen make it one stop among several, with a fjord cruise on top.

Bus from Flåm
The simplest way to the platform without a car.
The bus trip from Flåm is a pure bus excursion. It uses an air-conditioned bus for the round trip from Flåm and a scenic stop at the Stegastein viewpoint. Entry tickets to other attractions are not part of it, and a child seat can be requested. The stop in Flåm is stop C, and in Aurland the bus leaves from stop F next to the church. Children from 0 to 3 years travel free but must be booked with you.
From 01.11.2026 to 31.03.2027 a winter bus leaves Flåm at 09:30, 12:45 and 14:30. The stay at the platform is short, so use the time to walk to the end of the platform and look down the fjord. Check the timetable of the bus before you travel, because it can change.
Driving up and parking
What changed in 2026.
By car you take the county road Fv. 5627 from Aurlandsvangen. It is open all year, but a clear road in every kind of weather is not guaranteed. The mountain crossing from Aurland towards Lærdal is closed in winter. The Lærdal Tunnel page explains the mountain road and its season.
In 2026 parking at Stegastein is paid and limited to 30 minutes, according to a notice from the road authority dated 26.06.2026. Follow the signs on site, because the rule is enforced by the municipality. No parking tariff is published in that notice. In July there was a pilot with a park-and-ride from Hopen with 8 departures a day. It was a pilot and should not be treated as a permanent service.
Aurlandsfjord
What you see from the platform.
The Aurlandsfjord is an arm of the branching Sognefjord, which is 205 km long and up to 1,308 m deep. Flåm, where the railway and the boats meet, lies on this fjord. The Nærøyfjord cruise sails through the Aurlandsfjord on its way to Gudvangen. See the Nærøyfjord page for the route and the Flåm page for the village.
Tours that include Stegastein
Three kinds of trip, from a short bus ride to a day from Bergen.
The bus ticket is the only pure Stegastein trip. Two tours from Bergen combine the platform with a Nærøyfjord cruise. One is a guided day of 11 hours in a minibus with all fees and taxes, an air-conditioned vehicle, cruise tickets and USB-C charging ports. The other is a one-day minibus tour with a stop at Tvindefossen waterfall, a guided visit at a Viking village, a 2-hour electric cruise through the Nærøyfjord from Gudvangen, the Stegastein viewpoint and free time in Flåm. Food is not included, and children under 4 are not allowed. It has only a few reviews so far.
