Sognefjord tours at a glance
Sognefjord tours fall into three groups. Guided day trips start in Bergen and last 10.5 to 12 hours. Self-guided round trips combine train, boat and bus, and you plan the connections yourself. Short tours start in the fjord villages, for example a five-hour minibus drive from Flåm or a fast boat from Balestrand.
Whatever you choose, read the list of inclusions. A day trip with a fjord cruise is a different day from a bus tour that only stops at the fjord, and meals, pickup and age limits differ from tour to tour. The live offers sit in the card block on this page, and the sections that follow explain the differences.

Our picks: guided fjord days from Bergen
Most of these days combine a Nærøyfjord cruise with Flåm and either the Flåm Railway or Stegastein. Choose the day with the Viking village if the railway matters to you, or the day with lunch included if you prefer a shorter list of stops; the long bus day has no cruise at all.
Hand-picked tours, booked through GetYourGuide and Viator. Prices are indicative starting prices in euros (as of October 2026). Tap a tour for live availability and the current price in your currency.

Guided day trips from Bergen
Long days with a guide, a fjord and a lot of road.
These tours leave from Bergen and return the same evening. The day trip from Bergen page explains what such a day covers. The tours differ in four ways:
Gudvangen, Stegastein and Stalheim
A 12-hour tour with a guide, a picnic breakfast in Gudvangen, waterfalls, a stop in Aurland, free time in Flåm and the walk through the old Stalheimskleiva road. It has no fjord cruise, because Gudvangen is only a stop. Pickup outside the meeting point is not included.
Fjord cruise, Flåm and Stegastein with lunch
A 12-hour tour with a 2-hour fjord cruise, a light lunch, coffee or tea in the afternoon, the Stegastein viewpoint, the Tvindefossen waterfall and an English-speaking guide. Tell the operator about special diets by 14:00 on the day before.
With Flåmsbana and Bergensbanen
An 11-hour tour with a light lunch, a 2-hour fjord cruise, the Flåm Railway, the Bergen Railway and the Tvindefossen waterfall, led by a dedicated English-speaking guide.
Minibus with fees and cruise tickets
An 11-hour minibus tour via Nærøyfjord, Flåm and Stegastein. It includes all fees and taxes, cruise tickets and USB charging ports. The meeting point is in front of the tourist information in Bergen.
Of the tours described here, lunch is included only on the two that say so. On the other tours, plan to buy food on the way.
The Viking village tours
Two versions with the same stop.
Two tours add the Viking village Njardarheimr to the usual fjord and railway programme. One version takes 10.5 hours, with a live guide, a bus from Bergen, a guided visit to the village, the premium Nærøyfjord cruise, the Flåm Railway and the Bergen Railway. Food and drinks are not included.
The other version takes 12 hours and includes tickets for the Viking village, the cruise and the railway, with a driver-guide in an air-conditioned vehicle. It does not include food and does not take children under 4 years, and the vehicle is not wheelchair accessible. The village is a visiting stop on these days, not a history lesson. Compare the programme on the Flåm Railway page.
Self-guided round trips by train and boat
You hold the tickets, you keep the time.
Self-guided round trips give you the same landscapes without a guide or a bus group. A typical round trip from Bergen combines the Bergen Railway between Myrdal and Bergen, a fjord cruise on the Aurlandsfjord and the Nærøyfjord, the Flåm Railway and a bus ride. From Oslo, the trip adds the Bergen Railway from Oslo. A sleeping compartment on the night train is part of a round trip only when you book that option. A bus ride through the Stalheimskleiva is part of some round trips, only from May to September.
You travel without a guide, and you plan the connections yourself because the legs are separate bookings. Do not rely on free cancellation, and read the terms of each ticket. The route page about Norway in a Nutshell shows the building blocks. That product is run by Fjord Tours, and the round trips here are comparable routes.
Tours from Flåm and Balestrand
Shorter days that start in the fjord.
From Flåm, a small-group tour of 5 hours with a guide takes a minibus to Flåm, the Stalheim viewpoint, Gudvangen, the scenic road Aurlandsfjellet and the Stegastein viewpoint. It is a drive with viewpoints, not a walking tour. Aurlandsfjellet is closed in winter, so ask the operator what is possible on your date.
From Balestrand, two boat tours use a fast boat. One lasts 1.3 hours, the other is a guided round trip of 2 hours. Both include a life jacket, a suit, goggles and a safety briefing. They start in Balestrand and are not tours from Flåm. More ideas for your days are on the things to do page and the Flåm page.
Frequently asked questions
Which Sognefjord tour includes lunch?
Two of the Bergen day trips include a light lunch: the 12-hour tour with the 2-hour fjord cruise and Stegastein, and the 11-hour tour with the Flåm Railway. For the 12-hour tour, special diets must be reported by 14:00 on the day before.
Is a fjord cruise part of every Bergen day trip?
No. The 12-hour tour via Gudvangen, Stegastein and Stalheim stops in Gudvangen but does not include a cruise. Check the list of inclusions for the word cruise before you book.
Can I take children on the Viking village tours?
It depends on the tour. The 12-hour Viking village tour does not take children under 4 years, and it has car cushions for older children. Check the age rules of the tour you book.
Do the day trips include pickup at my hotel?
Do not assume it. The tour with the Gudvangen stop does not include pickup outside the meeting point, and the minibus tour meets in front of the tourist information. Check the meeting point on your booking.
What is the difference between guided and self-guided tours?
On a guided day trip a guide and a vehicle take you through the day. On a self-guided round trip you travel by scheduled train, boat and bus with tickets, and you plan the connections yourself.
