Sognefjord in winter: what keeps running
Sognefjord in winter works differently from the summer season, but it does not shut down. The Flåmsbana runs all year, the fjord ship between Flåm and Gudvangen sails on a winter timetable, and a bus climbs from Flåm to the Stegastein platform from 1 November 2026. Other things close or shorten their hours: the mountain road over Aurlandsfjellet is closed in winter, and the stave churches at Urnes and Borgund are outside their opening seasons.
Because of this, a winter day on the Sognefjord is built around transport that keeps going: a train, a ship and a viewpoint bus. Plan with a timetable in hand, and keep a spare hour in case a route is changed at short notice. Snow is not guaranteed in the valleys, so treat it as a bonus and not as the plan.

Our picks: winter-season day tours
Both run from Bergen with a Nærøyfjord cruise. Pick the Viking village and railway day if you want the train, or the Flåm and Stegastein day for the viewpoint; confirm operation for your dates.

Winter 2026 and 2027 at a glance
What runs, what is closed and where the dates come from.
Flåmsbana: all year
The 20 km line between Flåm and Myrdal runs in every season, and a one-way trip takes about 55 minutes. Tickets are valid only for the departure printed on them, so book ahead. All details are on the Flåmsbana page.
Fjord ship: winter timetable
From 16 October 2026 to 31 March 2027 the ship leaves Flåm at 09:30 and 14:45 and reaches Gudvangen at 11:30 and 16:45. From Gudvangen it departs at 12:00 and 17:15 and arrives in Flåm at 14:00 and 19:15. Times are subject to change, and in winter the route can be changed at short notice to a return trip to Flåm. See the Nærøyfjord page.
Stegastein: winter bus
From 1 November 2026 to 31 March 2027 a bus leaves Flåm at 09:30, 12:45 and 14:30. Children from 0 to 3 years travel free but must be booked too. Read more on the Stegastein page.
Aurlandsfjellet: closed
The mountain crossing towards Lærdal is closed in winter. The road up to Stegastein from Aurlandsvangen stays open all year, without a guarantee of free passage in every kind of weather.
Churches and museum: off season
Urnes is open from 2 May to 30 September 2026 and Borgund, according to its owner, from 15 April to 14 October 2026. The glacier museum in Fjærland opens only on Tuesdays and Thursdays from January to March. Details are on the stave churches page and the glacier page.
Winter fjord safari and snowshoe walks
A RIB operator in Flåm runs all year. Its winter trip lasts 1.5 hours and is offered from November to March. You meet 30 minutes before departure, and access closes 10 minutes before the boat leaves. We do not list a price or age limits here, so ask the operator when you book and bring warm, windproof clothing.
The same operator offers snowshoe walks, with a meeting time 15 minutes before the start. Walking tracks in winter are not all open or safe in the same way as in summer, so do not assume that a summer trail is passable. Our hiking page explains the valleys and the rules for walking in Norway.
Northern lights
Northern lights can appear in winter, but they come without a guarantee. According to NOAA, three things matter: geomagnetic activity, darkness and the viewing conditions, which includes a clear sky. Stronger activity moves the visible zone further away from the poles.
The Norwegian space weather service NOSWE at UiT publishes aurora forecasts, among others for Bergen. They are not a prediction for every fjord valley, so use them as a general guide and look at the cloud cover where you are. We give no sighting rate for the Sognefjord, and a winter tour does not include a promise of lights.
Driving in winter
Check the road status before every drive. The Lærdal Tunnel on the E16 is 24.5 km long, and construction work with announced closures from 18:00 to 06:00 starts on 16 November 2026, according to notices of 7 August and 23 September 2026. Buses are let through at certain times. The Lærdal Tunnel page has the details and the status of the Aurlandsfjellet road.
If you arrive by public transport, the express bus line and the train from Bergen run through the winter, and our getting there page compares the options. Plan the dark hours of the afternoon as well: the last ship from Gudvangen in the timetable above arrives in Flåm at 19:15.
