Flåm at a glance
Flåm lies at the end of the Aurlandsfjord, one of the arms of the Sognefjord, in Vestland. The village is a transfer point more than a place with a long list of sights: the Flåmsbana goes up to Myrdal from here, the Nærøyfjord boat leaves for Gudvangen, and buses go to the Stegastein viewpoint and to the start of the Aurlandsdalen hike. Many visitors pass through in a few hours, and others use it as a base for several days.
The old station building houses the Flåmsbanamuseet, and entry is free. Lockers are available at the customer centre, which helps if you arrive in the morning and leave in the afternoon. Flåm is a good place to see how the pieces of the fjord region fit together, but do not expect it to be next to everything: Gudvangen and Urnes are reached by boat or by road, not on foot.

Flåm in one day
A short plan for a day with the train and the fjord.
With one day in Flåm, combine the railway and the boat. Ride the Flåmsbana up to Myrdal and back, which takes about 55 minutes in each direction, and keep the afternoon for the fjord. The railway runs all year, but tickets are valid only for the departure printed on them, and Myrdal has no ticket office or machines. You can find the rules on the Flåm Railway page.
If you arrive on the fast boat from Bergen, you land in Flåm at 13:40. That timetable is valid from 1 April to 31 October 2026, so for later dates wait for the next season's timetable. In the winter season, the Nærøyfjord boat leaves Flåm at 09:30 and 14:45 and returns at 14:00 and 19:15, from 16 October 2026 to 31 March 2027. Times can change, and in winter the route can be switched at short notice into a return trip to Flåm.
For luggage, use the lockers at the customer centre. On board the boats, luggage racks are unguarded and used at your own risk.
Excursions from Flåm
Buses, boats and walks around the village.
Stegastein by bus
The bus to the Stegastein viewpoint leaves from stop C in Flåm. Children aged 0 to 3 years travel free but must be booked too. The winter bus runs from 1 November 2026 to 31 March 2027, with departures at 09:30, 12:45 and 14:30. See Stegastein.
Nærøyfjord boat
The boat sails through the Aurlandsfjord and the Nærøyfjord to Gudvangen in about 2 hours, and also in the other direction. See the Nærøyfjord page.
Fast RIB boat
A RIB provider in Flåm runs trips all year. In winter, from November to March, the trip lasts 1.5 hours. Meet 30 minutes before departure, because access closes 10 minutes before. The provider names the car park at Nedre Brekkevegen 34, so check the parking rules on site rather than assuming free or overnight parking.
Valley and bikes
A walk in the Flåm valley and bike rental are offered by season, in spring, summer and autumn. A bus to Østerbø for the Aurlandsdalen hike takes about 60 minutes. It runs daily in July and August and from Friday to Sunday in June, September and October. See hiking.
Three tours fit a visit to Flåm. A self-guided tour from Oslo takes 18 hours and includes the itinerary, the 2-hour cruise from Gudvangen to Flåm, a bus ride and tickets for the Flåmsbana and the Bergen Railway. Lunch, drinks and a guide are not included. A 12-hour tour from Bergen includes a visit to the village of Flåm, a 2-hour Nærøyfjord cruise, Stegastein and a light lunch. A private tour from Bergen to Oslo takes 15 hours, with a premium cruise from Gudvangen to Flåm and the Flåmsbana, and ends in Oslo.
Aurland and Undredal by boat
Stops that need a booking.
The Nærøyfjord boat can call at Aurland, Undredal, Dyrdal and Styvi, but only by prior notice before departure at the starting port. Without a request, the boat does not stop there. If you want to see Undredal or Aurland from the water, ask when you book. Getting to Flåm from Bergen is covered on the getting there page.
