Where to base yourself: Flåm, Balestrand, Sogndal
Where to stay in Sognefjord is mostly a question of transport. The fjord is long and branched, and the places visitors want to reach sit on different arms, so a base that saves you a connection is worth more than a base that looks good on a map. The advice below is a guide drawn from the real train, boat and bus links, not a ranking of any kind.
Flåm is the usual base for people who want the railway and the fjord cruise. The Flåmsbana starts here, the Nærøyfjord boats leave from here, and the bus to the Stegastein platform also departs from Flåm. Staying in the village means you can reach all of that without a car. Read more on the Flåm page.
Balestrand lies on the middle part of the fjord. It is a stop on the fast boat from Bergen and a visitor destination with an arts and tourism tradition, and it has its own accommodation. It suits travellers who want a quieter pace away from the railway crowds.
Sogndal is a practical choice when you continue onward by air or road. Sogndal Airport has flights from Oslo and Bergen, and the airport bus reaches the town in about 30 minutes. Daily service on each connection is not promised, so check the timetable for your dates.

Sognefjord hotels
What to look at when you compare places to sleep.
Searching for Sognefjord hotels or "sognefjorden hotels" brings up options in every village along the water. We do not name or rank any property here. Prices depend strongly on season, location and facilities, and we do not publish room rates because they change with every booking window.
Match the base to the plan
If your days are built around the Flåmsbana and the Nærøyfjord cruise, sleeping in Flåm saves early transfers. If you want to see the Urnes stave church, the Solvorn ferry side of the Lustrafjord is a better starting point.
Check the connections
Villages along the fjord are linked by ferries, buses and a few trains. Look at the first and last departures before you pick a village, especially outside summer.
Think about luggage
There are lockers at the customer centre in Flåm. On the Nærøyfjord boats, luggage racks are unattended and you leave bags at your own risk.
Bergen as a base
Bergen and Voss are the big transport hubs before you reach the fjord. Many visitors sleep in Bergen and take a long day trip, others overnight in Bergen at the start or end of the trip. If you are weighing it up, the neighbouring guide has a page on where to stay in Bergen.
A day from Bergen can include the fjord, the railway and a mountain viewpoint, but it makes for a long day. Our day trip from Bergen page explains what fits in, and the getting there page compares the routes between Bergen and Flåm.
Paying and prices in Norway
The currency is the Norwegian krone. Cards and mobile payment are widely used, and Visa and Mastercard are accepted more often than American Express or Diners Club. Even so, a small cash reserve is sensible for small kiosks and rural spots.
As a rough national orientation, a cheap restaurant meal costs 190 to 350 NOK and a cappuccino 35 to 65 NOK. These are country-wide figures, not Sognefjord averages, so treat them as a guide only.
Good to know when you choose a base
Mobile coverage
Coverage is not continuous in every valley, so download maps and tickets before you set off. Roaming terms depend on your own contract.
Camping and the right to roam
If you pitch a tent, keep at least 150 m from inhabited houses. The right to roam is not a permit to park a camper van anywhere. Fire restrictions apply in and near forest from 15 April to 15 September.
Access
Accessibility varies by stop and by vehicle. Ask each operator what applies for your trip, because no single statement covers a whole route.
