Things to do in Sognefjord at a glance
The Sognefjord is Norway's longest and deepest fjord, 205 km long and up to 1,308 m deep. It branches into arms such as the Aurlandsfjord, the Nærøyfjord and the Lustrafjord, and the sights lie on different arms. The places are not a walkable area: Flåm, Gudvangen and Urnes are linked by boats, trains and roads, so choose a few and connect them.
Start with the water. The Nærøyfjord is the most visited fjord arm, and the Sognefjord cruise page compares the boats. The Flåm Railway and the Stegastein viewpoint are the most visited stops on land. For a base and a timetable, use the where to stay and getting there pages.

Our picks: fjord activities to book
The guided boat tour from Balestrand is the quieter choice, while the private Oslo day and the minibus day with the Viking village cover several highlights at once.

Balestrand
A stop in the middle of the fjord.
Balestrand is a visitor destination with a link to art and tourism and its own range of places to stay. The Norled fast boat between Bergen and Flåm stops here. From Balestrand there are two boat trips on small boats. A fast boat sightseeing tour takes about 1.3 hours, and a guided boat tour into the Finnabotn takes 2 hours. Both include a life jacket, an insulated suit, goggles and a safety briefing, and they start in Balestrand.
The wider choice of boats, including the long sailing from Bergen in season, is on the Sognefjord cruise page.
Sogndal
A base for onward travel.
Sogndal is useful as a stop for onward travel. Sogndal Airport (SOG) has flights from Oslo and Bergen, and the airport bus takes about 30 minutes to Sogndal. Connections vary by date, so check the timetable. The NW420 express bus links Sogndal, Lærdal, Flåm, Voss and Bergen. You find more on the where to stay page.
Kayaking on the Nærøyfjord
One activity among the others.
Kayaking on the Nærøyfjord is offered as an activity on the fjord. Prices, age limits and the conditions for each outing depend on the provider, so ask before you book and judge whether it suits your experience. This guide has no kayak tour on its cards.
Gudvangen, Undredal and Aurland
The fjord villages around the Aurlandsfjord and Nærøyfjord.
Gudvangen is the end point of the Nærøyfjord cruise from Flåm. Aurland and Undredal are stops of that cruise, but only after you register in advance. The Nærøyfjord page describes the route. In Flåm you find the railway museum, which is free to enter, and lockers at the customer centre. See the Flåm page for the village.
If you want a longer plan, read about the hiking, the stave churches, the Nigardsbreen glacier, the Lærdal Tunnel and mountain road, the winter season, the seasons and when to go and the history of the area.
Day tours and long trips
Three offers that show the range.
A private day from Oslo takes 15 hours in a private air-conditioned vehicle with a driver-guide. It includes Flåm Railway tickets, tickets for a 2-hour Sognefjord cruise and Bergen Railway tickets, bottled water and child seats on request. It is a private offer and sits at the top of the price range. Check the pick-up place when you book.
A guided day from Bergen of 12 hours has tickets for a Viking village, a Nærøyfjord cruise and the Flåm Railway. Read about the day trip from Bergen for similar tours.
