Sognefjord day trip from Bergen: the basics

Many visitors go from Bergen to the Sognefjord in a single day. The tours drive inland to Gudvangen and Flåm, cross the Nærøyfjord by boat and return in the evening. Most are guided bus tours that fill 10 hours or more, so they are long days with set stops.

The distances explain why. By road, Bergen to Flåm takes about 2.5 hours via Voss, as an orientation value without traffic. On the water, the Nærøyfjord cruise takes about 2 hours. Stegastein has paid parking limited to 30 minutes, and the Flåm Railway runs for about 55 minutes in each direction. Combining any of these into one day means an early start from Bergen.

What a day from Bergen covers

The stops that return on most tours.

Most tours that leave Bergen for the Sognefjord share the same core: the drive east, a stop at Tvindefossen waterfall on some, time in Flåm and a boat ride on the Nærøyfjord. Several add Stegastein. If you want details on the platform and the parking rule, read the Stegastein page. Parking there is paid and limited to 30 minutes according to a notice from the authority dated 26.06.2026, so follow the signs on site.

The most booked day tour from Bergen takes 12 hours. It includes a 2-hour fjord cruise, a light lunch, coffee or tea in the afternoon, Stegastein, Tvindefossen and an English-speaking guide. Dietary requests must be sent by 14:00 on the day before. Another tour of about 11.5 hours has a guide, all fees and taxes, a fjord cruise and train tickets. Its title names the Flåm Railway, Stegastein and the Nærøyfjord. Pick-up services are not included, so you go to the meeting point in Bergen.

With or without the Flåm Railway

The train adds a leg, but also a ticket and a timetable.

One tour of 10 to 13 hours includes the Flåm Railway journey, a light packed lunch, the admission fee, an English-speaking guide, an air-conditioned vehicle and a 2-hour UNESCO fjord cruise. Meeting time in Bergen is 07:30, departure 07:45. Tours without the railway use the time for more stops by road instead.

Another tour of about 12 hours has the Gudvangen, Stegastein and Stalheim stops, a guide and a picnic breakfast in Gudvangen, but it has no boat trip, only a stop in Gudvangen. If a cruise matters to you, check that the tour lists one. More about the train is on the Flåm Railway page, and more about the crossing on the Nærøyfjord page.

Guided tour or self-guided trip

Choose by how much you want to organise yourself.

On a guided tour the bus, the guide and the schedule are fixed, which suits a single long day. A self-guided trip uses public transport tickets and leaves the connections to you. Those round trips are compared on the Norway in a Nutshell page, and the ways between Bergen and Flåm are compared on the getting there page. Fjord crossings by boat are on the Sognefjord cruise page.

For another fjord reached from Bergen, there is a separate guide to Hardangerfjord. Anything from Bergen to the Sognefjord is on this page, whichever way you go.
